Ethel Mae Hassel

Ethel Mae Hassel, 87, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, passed away Sunday, November 29, 2009, at the Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She was born September 11, 1922, in Urbana, Ohio, to the late Edgar Leroy Sr. and Jane Marie (Shackleford) Boyd. 

On June 26, 1942 she married John Hassel in Urbana, and he preceded her in death January 21, 1982. Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Edgar Leroy Jr. and Francis Elwood Boyd, and two sisters, Patricia Ann Ratleff and Helen Lucille Boyd.

Surviving are three brothers, John Alfred Boyd Sr. of Urbana; Samuel Henry (JenneMary) Boyd of Columbus, Ohio; Lawrence Nelson Boyd of LaBelle, Florida, and several nieces and nephews.           

During World War II, Ethel worked at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Fairborn, Ohio. She retired from Westinghouse in Bellefontaine after many years of service.           

She was a 1940 graduate of Urbana High School, and later went to Urbana College and graduated in 1974. In 1977 she received her MBA from the University of Dayton.           

Ethel was a member of Grace AME Church in Bellefontaine.

Rev. Ray Harper will conduct the funeral service at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, December 5, 2009, at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.  Burial will be in the Rushsylvania Cemetery in Rushsylvania, Ohio.     

The family has requested that memorial contributions may be made to the following:  St. Paul AME Church  316 E. Market  Urbana, OH 43078; Grace AME Church  233 S. Main St., Bellefontaine, OH 43311; or First Friends Church  808 W. Columbus Ave.  Bellefontaine, OH 43311
