George W. Thompson

George W. Thompson, 94, of Belle Center, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at his daughters residence in Bellefontaine, Ohio. He was born April 10, 1916 in Fayette County Ohio to the late Lowell and Zella (Riley) Thompson.

On October 6, 1943 he married M. Virginia Peters in Greenup, Kentucky, and 27 hours after his life mate went to be with Jesus, he followed her. Also preceding him in death was a son, James E. Thompson on March 6, 1972 and four brothers, Roy, Jim , Jack and Kenneth Thompson.

He is survived by sons, Roger W. (Sandy) Thompson of Kenton, Ohio, and George C. Thompson I of Lakeview, Ohio; daughters, Trudy Thompson of Bellefontaine, and Karen L. Shafer of McGuffey, Ohio; a sister, Fay Lane of Washington Court House, Ohio; twelve grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; and special families, Bill and Cindy Stratton of Belle Center and Marsha Hammonds of Bellefontaine.

A farmer from 1949 to 1972 in the Belle Center area, he graduated in 1934 from Jeffersonville High School. After farming he went to Frigidaire in Dayton, Ohio to become certified in appliance repair and worked for Bairs Appliance in Bellefontaine until 1988. He also opened a lawn mower repair shop at his home in Belle Center which he closed at the age of 84. He was an United States Army veteran serving in World War II as a Staff Sergeant. He served as Commander for the Willard Stout American Legion Post # 266 in Belle Center and was a Grand Marshall for the Memorial Day parade for several years. He was a member of the Hardin County Honor Guard and served with the Hardin County Commissioners and was a Rushcreek Township Trustee. He was a fifth level Parliamentarian leader for Lawrence Valley Grange. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill Primitive Baptist Church in Urbana where he was an Ordained Deacon in the Church. He was a true humanitarian and took strangers into his home, fed them, educated them, and acquired homes, vehicles and jobs for them. Between 1949 and 1972 he took in seventeen children from other families who had been orphaned by tragedy. He lived by the parody, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime". He believed no matter what you have, you shared it. He loved fishing, hunting and being outdoors. George was known by many, loved by all and he followed his life mate just the way he wanted to.

Elder Greg Moore and Elder J.C. Hager will officiate the funeral service at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 28, 2010, at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Belle Center, where calling hours are from 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, October 27, 2010.
